Water for Thar(solution)

Thar desert is the driest place of Sindh province. It is acknowledged from the history that once it was flooded portion of the province because Indus river flowed upon it. The water of Indus was not yet disciplined so it was at liberty to move on different pathways but in its passage it not only benefited the adjacent areas but also wreaked havoc by causing uncontrollable floods. At last the river was tamed by constructing banks for securing its water and saving other land from periodic plunging. However, in this graft the water of Indus was taken away from the Thar desert which is thirsty from thence.

The land of Thar is not fit for erecting an irrigation canal system yet it is not impossible in this age of technology and engineering. But if government is indisposed or lack capitals for such a giant scheme still there exist other options which can work wonder in cracking the water crises of Thar region. Here is one solution. Government and NGOs should construct small and medium concrete ponds in large number beside each residential area (as there is vast empty area beside each town and village there) which might amass the rain water. It is fact that this desert receives handsome amount of rain almost every year, there are rare times when the summer passes away leaving the desert dry. These large number of stony ponds may not be used for irrigating agricultural land but these would suffice the water demand for household purpose round the year. But while constructing the pond it must be kept in mind that these ponds must not overlap the already present natural ditches and dents for storage of water but they add to the reserve quantity.

Government can initiate the project with few million Pakistani rupees from the annual development fund and associate with itself the services and resources of Thar coal entrepreneurs, CPEC and the all NGOs working in the area. The people of Thar are indeed in need of government and other elite bodies’ courtesy to their this matter. A quick venture to this direction would on one hand earn goodwill and political support and on the other hand would resolve the elongated issue of inhabitants of Thar. Moreover, this piece of land might reduce the pressure of migration from other cities and towns of Sindh.
