Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Online Learning

intelligent tutoring system

Intelligent tutoring system is first coined by the J.S.Brown in 1982 as innovative term for intelligent computer aided instruction (ICAI). Intelligent tutoring system is computer software which gives feedback to students without interventions of human teacher.  Traditional education software only provide learning material to students but intelligent tutoring systems works dynamically, display content according to users leaning behaviors, progress and provide feedback and guidance to students without involvement of human teacher.

Intelligent tutoring systems mostly consist of four modules. Student, Domain, Pedagogy and user interface module. Student model is used for storing student progress and behaviors. Pedagogy module is concerned with learning strategies to provide effective learning to students. Domain module is about subject for whom intelligent tutoring system has been designed and developed and Interface model is about interaction of students with tutoring system.

Different intelligent tutoring systems have been developed for subjects such as mathematics, English comprehension, and programming. Metacognitive mathematics tutor developed by Asad Raza and et.al for intelligent tutoring of students for mathematics of six and seven grade class. Pedagogy module designed with metacognitive learning strategies. Tutor provides feedback to students and also interacts with students through open response fields which are given in Hints.

COVID-19 pandemic also effects traditional education system due to social distance. Educationist was reluctant to online education as compared to traditional onsite education but due to COVID-19, they migrated to online education which proves its effectiveness. Universities around the world have successfully continued their education and even conducted their examinations through online system. Online learning is now at its peak; schools, colleges and universities are providing education through online using different software and apps such Zoom, Google meeting, Microsoft office 365 and Moodle. Different online platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, and Udacity are also providing online courses to students. However online learning management systems and apps only have features for video, audio and text content representation. There is not any feedback, guidance and interactive learning environment where students learn without human tutor. Intelligent tutoring systems can be integrated with online learning environments to make more responsive and intelligent online learning environments.

The Intelligent tutoring system research study may consist of multidisciplinary areas which include different areas such as Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive science and Computer Human Interaction.
