Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality is simulation of the real world using computer technologies. Virtual Reality has emerged from a simulated painting to Oculus Rift. Virtual reality is used in many applications from health to education. Physiotherapy simulation, Hospital Management through VR environment, English language learning using VR environment are examples of virtual reality applications. This research paper provides the systematic survey of Virtual reality from its introduction, history to latest current trends in Virtual Reality.
Virtual Reality is technology which uses 3D
simulated environment and provides interaction to users with 3D environment.
Virtual reality is based on simulated 3D environment, Special tool created for Virtual
reality and Interaction interface for examining 3D digital world. The virtual
reality concept starts from computer graphics, especially 3D computer graphics
is the founding stone of VR technology, without 3D technology we can not
imagine VR. VR technology is not the same as computer graphics however it depends
on 3D computer graphics we can differentiate between VR and computer graphics
in a way that VR provides a user interactive interface computer graphics based
virtual environment and create the real feeling which a human feels when
interacting with the real environment.
VR applications are used widely in most areas
such as entertainment, education, health, manufacturing, Tourism,
Advertisement, Military, Culture and Heritage. There are enormous examples of
Virtual reality such as Military war simulation, Virtual Surgery, Virtual Tour,
Virtual classes, Virtual Sports and Virtual Zoo. Virtual reality history starts
from the mid 80s when new computers have emerged but at that time it was very
expensive technology and there were very huge helmets that are not feasible for
every common people so its use was not practical. Now there is an era of the smartphone
so new technologies have been developed which enable users to just put glasses
or virtual box on their eyes and be experience the virtual world.
VR also provides foundation for augmented
reality (AR). Augmented reality includes the virtual and real world environment.
The virtual environment is based on VR technology. Augmented reality implies
digital objects with the real world using the Smartphone camera. Augmented reality has dominated Virtual
Reality due to its wide range of applications and interaction with the real
world but virtual reality shuts the door of the physical world. Mixed reality
is the combination of VR and AR. Microsoft HoloLens glasses is an example of
mixed reality technology.
